Make Money from Your Site #2: Advertising

A few useful ideas for making money with your website with advertising.

In Part #1, we looked at using sales to earn money from your website. In this part, we look at advertising - often called affiliate programs (yes, like sales) or sponsorship.

Generating income through sponsorship is done by allowing other sites and companies to display their advertisements on your website. Sponsorship programs come in three different models - pay-per-sale, pay-per-click and pay-per-impression.

Pay-per-sale (also called pay-per-lead) is essentially affiliate selling. The ads you display can be in the form of generic banners pointing to your sponsor’s website, or in the form of individual item links displayed on a virtual shopfront. You make money when a clickthrough from your website results in a purchase or sign-up.

On the pay-per-impression model, you display your sponsor’s advertisements in the form of buttons, banners, text links or popup ads. Payment is awarded depending on the number of times your sponsor’s ad is served up on your page. This model doesn’t require much user participation, and high-traffic sites can easily profit from this system.

Check this: PopUpSponsor is one such company that offers pay-per-impression sponsorship.

On the pay-per-click model, you also display advertisements in the form of buttons, banners, text links or popup ads, but more user interaction is needed. Payment is awarded depending on the number of times your visitors click through to your sponsor’s site.

Check this: Google’s AdSense program offers very flexible and rewarding pay-per-click sponsorship.

If you can’t decide which system works best for you, there are some companies out there that offer a variety of advertising models, neatly combined into one package.

Mamma.com, for example, runs pay-per-click and pay-per-impression campaigns, with the option of popup and non-popup ads. Companies like Mamma.com are often called advertising networks, affiliate networks or banner brokers.

It’s easy to attractively incorporate advertising into your site design, and with the many opportunites available, it’s a great way to grow your hobby.

Different forms of advertising suit different types of sites with different types of visitors. So do a bit of research, don’t be afraid to experiment, and find out which works best for you.
